Tom, the K10D costs about the same as the other manufacturer's mid-line models, not the bottom end (which are priced similarly to a K100D for all but Canon, and the Rebel XT is overpriced). The K10D offers similar performance to the D80 for a bit less money, but adds a couple unique features (DNG, Sv and TAv modes) and a couple bits of seriously added value (the weather sealing and SR). I don't think it could go up against the 40D in price without adding some more performance (needs a better shutter and at least 5fps, as well as Live View), but I think it might have been as successful if it had come in between the 30D and D80 in price on introduction.
