On 7/8/07, Kamiel Wanrooij, discombobulated, unleashed:

>The 85/1.4 goes for around $1000, the 135/1.8
>for $2000. Apart from their specs, rarity, and the fact that they are
>somewhat a collector's item, are they worth anywhere near these prices? And
>is their 'status' overrated?

Well, as far as the A*85/1.4 goes, I will be buried with mine. It's such
a brilliant lens that when I bought a non-Pentax camera, I adapted it to fit:

The nice thing about this lens IMO is that wide open it is such a good
performer. I like my portraits with a very shallow DOF and what use is a
fast lens if it's crap at max aperture?

This is my second A*85 - the first one I had was mint in box and I paid
650 GBP. I sold it a year later for 750 GBP. I can't remember how much
i paid for my current version but I think ti was about 500 GBP which
ties in with a grand, US.

The 135 is perhaps more legendary, but I have no experience with it. I
would say that if you're into portraits or available light shooting
(rock concerts etc) then go for the 85mm - it is worth it's weight in gold.
