I doubt it. I would attribute it to cost control, trying to maintain a marketable, profitable product at a reasonable price. The tradeoff is between cost of manufacture and warranty costs, not longevity/ durability, since only a few people buying these kinds of products use them for more than a few years at a stretch before updating to newer equipment.
