I think one of the advantages of discs is that they stay much cleaner and mud-free than rim-brakes. That would be because of their location, some 14 inches from the ground. As far as maintenance, rather than cables, they're hydraulic, so one must be careful of leaks. I don't know that they're more maintenance, but I'd guess they're different mainenance.
