This was my first thought as well, as I've had mine do the same thing.

I managed to disassemble mine enough to get at the ink pads, then I  
took them out and gave them a good rinse and let them dry.  Getting  
the printer apart was a bit of a pain - the pads aren't designed to  
be user-accessible unlike the larger printers.

You can reset the printer's ink count either by downloading a small  
program, or there's a sequence of front-panel buttons you can use.   
Unfortunately I've forgotten it but it shouldn't be too hard to find  
on the net :)

Either that or you can save yourself the headaches and take it in to  
a service agent.

Next time mine requires this I'll probably drill a little hole under  
the waste-ink hose and raise the printer by enough to put a little  
tray underneath with a sponge in it.
