Indeed. It's often not so much a cast that an image *couldn't* have 
been done on film as that it *wouldn't* have been if the photographer 
had been using film. 

One type strikes me as falling into that category is exotic flash 
setups: Multiple flashes at various locations within a scene, sometimes 
at a variety of power settings. Look through 
http://strobist.blogspot.com/ and you'll find examples that were done 
on digital because doing so on film, though possible, would have taken 
too much trial and error to be practical.
