Pentax didn't skip the 8MP cameras. Nobody made an 8MP sensor in DX format, so they couldn't make one. Right now there are essentially 3 sensors available to Pentax in the DX format, the 6.1MP sensor in most of the Pentax DSLRs, the 10MP sensor in 2 and 4 channel versions and the Sony 12.4MP CMOS sensor currently in the Nikon D2Xs. There are currently no other options in 1.5x crop, and even if they went up in size, they'd be stuck with 10MP sensors unless they rolled their own. If we see a higher-density sensor in DX format, it will be in a Nikon first.
