Here's another highly scientific method (thanks for the term, Dave).

It takes less time to activate SR than to achieve focus with AF. :-)

Test conditions:
K10D with 31mm ltd.,
Tv mode, preset to 1/6 seconds (well outside my personal handholding
range with *istD)
Lens prefocused to 1,5 meters.
Motif at 50 cm distance, illuminated by a single 40W bulb.

The obvious flaw with the test is of course that I can't give any
exact time for how long it takes to activate SR at all. OTOH, the
purpose of both AF and SR is to give you sharp pics, and as long as it
takes "one one thous" or less for both there's no reason to whine
about it, imho.
