If I understand the concept correctly, the leaf shutter in a lens works at a 
node, where all the light rays cross.  Or, at least, as close to that as they 
can.  This allows them to be quite small and responsive.  If they were at focal 
plane, they would have to be much, much bigger and more complicated.  This 
would make them less responsive.  I suspect that there would have to be some 
innovative design to make exposure consistent across the frame, also.  What 
brought this on?
