Having owned both at one point (I currently have the 16-45), the 16-45 
is certainly worth the extra cost. While the 18-55 is a good little 
lens, and rather well built for a kit lens, the 16-45 has it beat in 
useful range (That extra 2mm at the wide end really shows, the missing 
10 at the long end less so), the fixed aperture is a big win (Since it's 
a stop faster at the long end) and the 16-45 is a little sharper, has 
better contrast and seems to resolve a bit more detail.
