John, I own one of these lenses (A very nice little Super Takumar 50/1.4). Only one of my rubber-grip lenses has a smooth grip (the $40 SMC-F 35-80 f4-5.6). The knurled rubber grips have more friction and grip better than the knurled metal units. Both are thoroughly usable (unlike the craptacular focus ring on the SMC-F 35-80)
