I bet they were all smart enough to open the apertures
Once in a while if they were shooting M42 SLR
Cameras with autoaperture lenses and bodies.
They probably were not even using SLRS.

Name dropping won't help. I doubt if John knows who those guys were, and

even if he does, he will insist that they were retarded assholes for 
shooting that way, and that their pictures would have been way better 
had they used correct shooting methods.
