Yes, technology is evolving, we shouldn't restrict imaging only to traditional CCD/CMOS imagers. There are already first sensors with very high dynamic range like this one: http://www.ims-chips.de/content/pagedb/pagedb.php3?id=e0841# The most interesting part in description is "Aperture or exposure control is not necessary" ;-)
