My great uncle was an old time carpenter. He drove 16d nails with two 
hits. One to start it and one to drive it home. Using an air nailer is 
easier than learning how to use a hammer. I never have; you have to hit 
that nail absolutely true or it bends every time. That I know from 
experience. It takes me 3 or 4 hits to drive an 8d.
