Hi Jack, I definitely find the the manipulated image with the "shadow" more appealing.
As for your conscience, I can't speak to that... :-) It's interesting that you state lookers have not commented about the unnatural look. I suspect it's because we/they have been bombarded by unnatural images in the media for so long that we now often accept what we see without questioning it's authenticity. Special effects have so mesmerized us that we view them as common-place.
