Figure out the personalities, the group dynamics, the topics covered, etc. Inch one's way in slowly into the group. That's the way it works in real life and that's the way it works on the Net. On mailing lists and in newsgroups, lurk a bit first. Step lightly, don't try to anger people. That's for later. :-) When someone doesn't do that I really have to question their IQ.
