Bob, This country is shaped so that most of it's area is unsuited for growing crops. Pastures, however, can be found all the way up in the mountains.
The buildings belong to what we call a "seter" in Norwegian. In the older days, the valley farmers used to have a seter up towards the mountains where they would send the livestock in summer. The seter had to have all the facilities of a farm, except big storage space. About half of the farm staff would follow the livestock, to produce cheese and other dairy products, to harvest the berries they could find, etc. This particular place is called Liomseter, and is situated about 150 m below the treeline (the effective altitude where summers are too short for trees to grow). Today there is no real seter farming anymore. The pastures are kept open by sheep, but there's no staff around anymore. Instead, some of the cottages are for rent. -The ones with paint on them...:-) The photo shows only a few of the buildings, btw.
