Shel - I won't retract my feeling about some folk being
elitist judging from what
I've read here -- but I will explain my computer system and
its problems

System includes my ISP in my lingo... and the web in NY is
often slow no matter what
your set up is. I have a 7 year old computer Dell PEntium
3, 56 modem (yes, that also doesnt
run at full tilt) 13 g hard drive and 512 ram. I can't
afford DSL, can't get cable connection
through my current internet server in my physical area even
if I had the money.

I use Netscape communicator 4.6 for email and Mozilla
Firefox as a browser, but as
I read the list in NEtscape, if I click on a link to get to
a photo, as I have JAva
turned off in NEtscape problems sometimes ensue.

I may mess up some terms - in regards to current software
and everything on a windoze
plateform I'm virtually (no pun intended) self taught and I
probably say silly things as a result.

However, I've worked with computers since 1962 and made most
of my living writing market reasearch
tab specs back in the day. I haven't worked since a few
months after 62, about 7 years ago.

Of course, I was using main frame computers most of those
years and once on a PC was
using DOS and line editors. I resisted PC's as long as I
could and once I was forced
into them I still wasn't using Windows - I was talking to
the internet since 1994 in a
totally plain text environment - used pine for email, kedit
for writing everything.

I had to teach myself ms word and such.

As to connections -

When I get on line early in the morning or late at night
things move faster - if I try to
do anything between 4 and 6 pm or so I get all sorts of
super lag.

I am also really beginning to understand the term "you cant
teach and old dog new tricks'
I thought that meant because older dogs are stubborn, now I
know (though I can surely be
stubborn ) just how hard it is to learn anything new in the
first place and retain it for
more than 5 seconds in the second.

I don't know GOdfrey in person but I consider Paul a friend,
so I'm sure he is looking
at anything I've said as an intellectual exchange and not a
flame - though situations these
days are making me a bit more cranky than usual.

I also have my screen settings so i can SEE them... I have
an LCD monitor I got when
my crt died and thats a lot better for my eyes, but I still
have the monitor set so that
often things need scrolling to get seen.

Anyway, technology is definitely moving faster than I am,
but I'm not intimidated by
computers in general.

What little money I have is made on them even now and
everything that i HAVE to do
takes such a long time that downloading a 500k image just to
appreciate it is
really daunting...

Best,
ann
