Most of that stuff I know, Marnie. If something annoys me enough I learn how to deal with it. The most difficult one was getting rid of the nagging baloons.

There is, although I can not remember what it is off hand, a command line command where systems administrators can disable automatic, and even manual updates. It is just a matter of finding out where in that 1298 page book it is <grin>.

You can shut off most of the services Win XP runs, just click on services in the administration window. The hard part is figuring out what is necessary and what is a mere annoyance. At one time I had it down to 19 processes including the programs like AVG that I wanted running all the time. With the auto-updates running that has crept up to like 28-33.

So why was I running those auto-updates anyway? Well, someone had convinced me that WinXP was a bad security risk, and if I did not have those updates keeping it from being a virus magnet I would be sorry....

I just checked my usual security the things that I personally set, and it shows that my system would be difficult it break into from the Internet. Since it is impossible to make it impossible, I think I should just accept difficult. I do now have updates turned off but Windows keeps flashing that little yellow shield at me. That is my next project, making it disappear. But to get the look and feel back to the way I like it, it does seem like I am going to have to nuke the OS and start over. I think update has actually removed the old skins from my computer.

You know, now that I think about it, that may not be the way to disable Windows updates.
