There are some very good reviews of the lens, I was tempted myself but would 
prefer something a little wider than 17mm for the transition to digital which 
is the only thing that put me off.

I'm in full agreement with that statement. I shot a couple of rolls of film 
last summer of Port Sunlight here in the UK using FA 28mm f/2.8, FA 35mm f/2, 
FA 50mm F/1.4 and the Tamron 28-75 XR Di. I noted down which shots were taken 
with each lens, aperture etc. During the course of the day and the other work 
I was doing (not photographic) I misplaced my notes, I thought I'd easily 
spot the differences in the final prints, I was sooo wrong! It would appear 
the 17-35 XR shares the same qualities as it's stablemate.
