Adam, it gets tiring to me when people try to help by telling me to
throw money at the problem.  I've worked with the Z55, and it can
produce acceptable prints.  Have you used it?

The HP 5500 was the first Wilhem -tested-and-published printer to achieve excellent archival life.

And you're way off base on the original question:

If you establish a link between a printer and a profile in a
Windowscontrol panel, how does that affect photoshop? Do you know? I sure don't, and I've mucked with this stuff for quite a while.
