I've used a Z55 a bit. It doesn't produce anything close to acceptable prints by my standards. And given the cost of Lexmark Ink, upgrading printers (With a full set of ink) is going to cost about the same as replacing the ink will, and get you significant increase in quality, archivability and lower ink costs. The R220 and Epson Premium Lustre is about the best low-cost colour setup I have run across (Personally I use the HP 7660, but I don't print much colour these days) .I did say I wasn't sure about the HP, if it does produce good quality output (And the fact Wilhelm profiled it argues in it's favour) I'd just stick to working with that printer and avoid the Z55.

I simply can't recommend the effort involved in seting up a profile for the Z55 when it won't net you significant improvements, and the change in printers will cost roughly the same as a replacement ink cartidge and net you better profiles and output at the same time, not to mention cost savings in the long run (Epson ink is typically cheaper than Lexmark).

As to the colour management question, I can't really address that as I print from a fully profiled Mac, using the PS functionality, my editing system is a PC running XP, so Win98 probably handles it differently anyways.

Adam, it gets tiring to me when people try to help by telling me to
throw money at the problem. I've worked with the Z55, and it can

The HP 5500 was the first Wilhem -tested-and-published printer to achieve excellent archival life.

And you're way off base on the original question:

If you establish a link between a printer and a profile in a
Windowscontrol panel, how does that affect photoshop? Do you know? I sure don't, and I've mucked with this stuff for quite a while.

The Z55 isn't worth wasting your time on, not sure about the HP, as I'm not familiar with it.
