You got that right. I hate scanning negs. Prints are OK because I have some daylight-balanced tungsten bulbs if I need a reference... provided I actually want to match the print.
Scanner software tends to have auto-exposure settings which can be useful. On my most recent neg scans the scanner gave similar results to automatic machine prints... which weren't very accurate :)
I'm actually having trouble with slides at the moment. I finally get past a bunch of Velvia, which scans with a magenta cast, then I run into E100SW which is coming out with greenish highlights. Unfortunately I used to shoot a lot of E100SW before eventually switching to Provia 100F.
