You got that right. I hate scanning negs. Prints are OK because I have some daylight-balanced tungsten bulbs if I need a reference... provided I actually want to match the print. ...

Hmm. I started scanning film somewhere around 1988 at work, and somewhere around 1994 for my own work. Probably scanned several thousand of them by now, both negatives and slides. Negatives are far easier to scan than slides because they are less contrasty and it's easier to capture their full tonal range, due to more latitude.

What you're really saying is that you don't know how to color balance a negative, it seems. I agree that it's a skill that has some art to it.
