Note for Cotty: Its warming up here -- only -12C. I read (on the BBC
ticker) this morning that it's very cold in the UK a dreadful Siberian
-2C! And they expect *6 inches* of snow! My goodness. I love to swap our
hectares for some in Somerset.
Maybe on the Bristol Channel near Minehead.
At the moment, Scotland is cut off - the A1 from Alnwick to Berwick is
closed due to drifting. Probably, that is eejits drifting in cars.
I've spent an amusing morning watching numbskulls trying to get into our
street, with conspicuous failure.
First, there was a wazzock in one of the BMW sports cars. He went past
the end of the street on full lock with all wheels stationary. On
subsequent attempts, he seemed to think that, once traction was broken
(about a microsecond after he let out the clutch) it was best to keep
the engine at peak revs, presumably in order to allow the tyres to dig
through the packed snow. He gave up after about a dozen goes. He was
bleeding furious after the local window cleaner pobbled up the (approx.
15degrees) slope into the street in his Ford diesel van, after he had
strived so mightily in vain.
Then a Mazda MX played the same game, followed to my undying shame for a
specimen of my own countryman, by some Nissan SUV thing. All playing
the Whiteout Waltz, with severe cases of "do you reverse?". Utterly
pitiful.
After about two hours of this I had to go out. In direct contrast, the
heavily salted main roads are littered with vehicles doing about 15mph
wherever there is the thinnest layer of slush.
Roll on global warming.
