I just had a chance to hold Pentax SMCP-D FA Macro 100 F/2.8
(it is the new smaller version).

My first impression: how small and lightweight it is.
I never had a chance to hold the F or FA version of that lens,
but this one is really light.
Second impression: when I attached it to the body (DS) and tried to autofocus,
- the range of the motor run (and the lens extending) is loooong.
The noise is rather loud (or just annoying?).

Unfortunately, it doesn't have a focus range limiter like the one
available on F and FA, so if the AF misses - it goes the entire range.
And in low light (gloomy day, around 10 am, inside, desired exposure:
1/10 sec, f/2.8), - it misses easily and profoundly.
The hood is very loose and I would be afraid to lose it the first
time I walk with the camera in my hand with this lens and the hood attached.

On the positive side: unlike F, this lens has a clamp switch.
The lens has automatic AF clutch mechanism - so you can focus manually without
any additional switches if the body AF is not engaged.

Interesting detail: the lens is assembled in Vietnam, but the soft case
that comes with it, and lens caps are "made in Japan".
(and the manual is for both D FA 50/2.8 and 100/2.8)

Does anybody know if all D FA 100 F/2.8 are assembled in Vietnam?

I am still trying to choose between a D FA and a used FA.
I wish I could try them side by side.

Igor
