Then don't, buy him some good gear.
I have found with my children, if I buy them something of quality they
will use it, if they get something that is trashy, or is easily broken they
will soon discard it.
The equipment does not need to be top to the range, but needs to be
able to stimulate the mind(create a challenge) and be able to produce
a good result.
