Pro large CF:
If you go hiking, weight is important.
Without the drive it's one less gadget to manage. And recharge batteries for.

Con large CF:
If it fails, you're miserable.
Price.
Price.
And price...:-(


I'd say the cons outweigh the pros.

If the hard drive fails, you replace it and it won't burn a big hole down your pocket...

Also, unlike cards, when HD fails it is still possible to recover most of its contents. I had few HD failures on me (Late IBM hard drives were prone to controller burn out) and I witnessed the data recovery procedure. Painful and time consuming, yet resultative.

Jostein, how's that portable HD that you bumped in the car doing? ;-)
