Actually, you'd need a whole one stop faster a lens if you wanted to enlarge the (cropped) viewfinder image of a *ist-D to match the size of the viewfinder image in the MX.
But that's not relevant. The complaint was that the *ist-D didn't have the same brightness, or the same magnification, as the MX. That's not so - at the same magnification, the viewfinder images appear equally bright. Obviously at the same magnification the *ist-D has a smaller image. But that's because it has a smaller sensor, and the different viewfinder image sizes reflect this.
