The DS when used with an AF lens, and the AF-MF switch set to AF,
defaults to locking focus ONLY when you press the shutter halfway.
The setting is free to float until the time of the actual exposure.
You can change this behavior with a custom setting that will make it
work more like fixed lens digicams, it will then lock both AE and AF
with the shutter half-press so you can reframe and make the exposure
with a pre-set focus and exposure setting.
Or, with metering active (a momentary half press on the shutter
release), target the metering with the viewfinder and press the AE-
Lock button. A '*' indicator will illuminate and the exposure is
locked, won't shift until the meter times out or you press the AE-
Lock button again. (If you're in Tv or Av mode, rolling the
thumbwheel will allow you to hold the same exposure setting while
changing which [EMAIL PROTECTED] setting you want to use). Now focus and
frame independent of the meter setting.
If you are in Manual exposure mode, the camera will simply make the
exposure at whatever settings you've set, so you can just ignore any
changing indicators in the viewfinder. If you press the AE-Lock
button while targeting what you want to meter, the shutter speed will
jump to what the camera thinks is correct exposure and now the
readout on the lower right of the viewfinder will be set to 0.0 ...
changing shutter speed (and aperture with A-series or later lenses
set to "A") will indicate how far you are from the camera's
recommended exposure in the range of +/-3.0 EV.
