This is really an unfortunate problem. Pentax ought to do a recall frankly. That lens had a reputation as one of the sharpest in its class (ie, best in its price range). Now it has a reputation as one of the highest failure rate in its class. Who cares that it's failing out of warranty; this is a design defect that turns up a few years down the road.

I had this lens, and really liked it except that it wasn't quite long enough at the long end. Eventually I sold it and got a 28-105 f/3.2-4.5. When I sold it, this was before I had ever heard of rear element separation. Now I wonder if that one I sold has also suffered this fate yet.

Actually your FA 28-70/4 is going to limbo, Pentax won't take it back...

Sounds like the rear element separation got it. Mine died in the lens cabinet as well.

Hi!

It seems my FA 28-70/4 AL is going to see its creator... I mounted it on *istD after about a month or so of no use. What I see is this:

1. Very visible (in viewfinder) pink/magenta warm cast.
2. Sometimes it looks as if I am looking through a "dirty window" filter...

Is this *it*?

If so, current replacement I understand is 28-105/3.2-4.5. Am I correct?

Thanks.

Boris
