I just measured mine from the time of turning on the camera to first
shutter release with the 4gb microdrive is 3 seconds - fairly new
Hitachi drive on an *istD. If I have let the camera sit for awhile
with it on, the drive does need to spin up again and seems to take a
few seconds - probably the same 3 seconds. Solid state cards are
close to instantaneous. So if I am getting ready to shoot after a
reasonable pause, I'll usually press the shutter button halfway down
to get the drive to spin up and be ready.
