Do you mean to just R&R the old batteries, not necessarily install fresh ones (assuming that no fresh bats were handy at the moment)? Seems somewhat similar to how the LX behaves when its bats get low or run down.
One thing I've found with the *ist D and 20D is that when the battery indicator shows half-full (half the battery icon is shaded), you're done. Replace the batteries ASAP or risk dealing with the previously mentioned malfunctions. In my view there is no "low battery" warning on these cameras. Just an indicator to "CHANGE THE BATTERY NOW!!!"
