i think that they need a line of three bodies placed at about $700, $1300, and $2500. they will sell more $700 bodies than $1300, but the $1300 body is what will make money for them. the $700 and $2500 bodies need to break even or lose very little. if Pentax can't maintain a 3 body line, they will start losing market share from their already small one. the main things i need from a $2500 body are slightly higher frame rate (3-3.5fps), better AF (automatic tracking between sensors), larger buffer (10 RAW images or so), and higher megapixels (10-12). higher frame rate can be achieved by derating the shutter cycle limit with few changes to the shutter itself. better AF requires a faster CPU and better software. larger buffer is just more RAM. higher megapixels is coming anyway. i am willing to pay $5K for a better spec body, but at that price, i expect it to be a Nikon D2X clone in specs. i think if Pentax can sell 10-20K higher spec bodies at $2500, derived from the current *istD, they will break even. KM is most likely going to announce a 9D in the spring. we're going to get the 645D instead. i think Pentax will be lucky to sell 2000 of them.

Do you think they would sell enough high end, high performance bodies to make a profit?
I mean, providing they sold for less than the price of a Mercedes Benz?
