I've noticed the British commentator for the F 1 races, that broadcast on
Speed, uses the term lump when he's referring to the engine in an F 1 car.
Ken, is 'Speed' a US channel? Do you know what feed they take? Does the
British commentator refer to the 'F1 ITV pit crew' etc? If so, the
commentator is James Allen, joined by ex-formula 1 driver, Martin Brundle.
Yeah, lump is slang for engine round here.
What else can I tell ya. For cylinders we say 'pots'. We tend not to say
'headers', preferring simply 'manifold'. For tyres, we often say 'boots'.
And for trunk, we say 'boot'. Go figure ;-)
For hood, we say 'bonnet'. For fender, we say 'wing'.
For door, we say 'door'. <g>
More as i think of it.
There was a motorcycle engineer in the 1920/30s, who developed a lot of
this slang, called Willis. He was the originator of the term "double
knocker" for twin OHC. What a boring sod I am.....
