Thanks.
When I'm working with a 600mm lens, equivalent focal length 900mm on
a DS body, I will always use a tripod... :-)
Part of the reason for my shooting with the long lens and multiplier
on Saturday morning was to test out a Manfrotto 322RC2 Grip Action
Ballhead I've just purchased. Been looking at it a long time ... I
have a very nice Kirk BH-1 head already ... as I've missed my old
Manfrotto 3265 Grip Action ballhead for speed in field work. The
322RC2 seems a very nice upgrade on the 3265 and, while not as
precise as the Kirk, should be a good speedy head for my work on the
upcoming trip.
I did take one or two test exposures with and without mirror prefire
using the F100-300 and 2x-S combination at full focal length. At
speeds around 1/4-1/25 second, yes, you NEED the prefire or mirror
slap will get you. At 1/100 second and up, it's unnecessary: the
jitter probably happens after the exposure is completed.

That's very good. I like the juxtaposition of the live surfer with
the bronze. (Tripod mounted, you mean you're not as steady as
"Steady Seinquist").
Been a fairly productive weekend. This was taken in Santa Cruz
this past Saturday morning, testing the 100-300 zoom with 2x
teleconverter ... tripod mounted of course.
