Paul, Yes, that would be my direction of thinking. Also of course playing with tonality could help. For example you could turn to b/w and then even add some sepia and finally keep the bird in color... Or some other plan of editing as well.
I am not very well versed in this kind of editing myself, only starting to scratch the surface... I am glad though you saw some sense in my previous comment :). -- Boris
