As much as I hate the viewscreen on my Optio, I find the viewfinder to be so innacurate that it is only a best guess aproximation of what's being pictured.
For me, the characteristic of the viewscreen approach rather than using the viewfinder is better composition.

I rarely use the viewscreen on my Optio 550 (mainly for really close-up stuff or when checking focus). Two results of my tendency to use the viewfinder instead: One, since the display is turned off, people casually examining my camera regularly wonder what's wrong with it; two, I get very long battery life.
