2. I can't find anything in the manual about K/M/SM lens usage.

1- In the Custom Settings menu, set "Use Aperture Ring" to "Permitted".

For K/M lenses:
2- Switch camera to Manual exposure mode, Manual focus
3- Camera defaults to CW Averaging if you're on matrix metering
4- Set f/stop you want to use, be sure meter is powered on
5- set focus, press AE-Lock button : camera sets shutter speed
6- focus and release shutter

If you set the camera to any mode other than Manual, it will switch to Av exposure mode but will not stop the lens down, so you'll get properly exposed photos (unless it's too bright) at wide open aperture.

For SM lenses, same rig but you must manually close down the lens before metering and making the exposure. Av exposure mode is more useful since you manually stop down the lens before taking the picture.

Strangely Av/Tv/P and the green mode all seem to work the same way on the *ist-D with an K/M lens mounted.

Av is most useful with a fixed f stop such as a mirror lens, it's even fairly useful with the Vermer 12mm fisheye with it's waterhouse stops as well.
