I don't know what the "Green mode" is on the D, but on the DS the P, Av and Tv modes all default to Av mode. The lens will not stop down unless you are in M mode, then the AE-Lock button makes setting the shutter time semi-automatic.
Av is most useful with a fixed f stop such as a mirror lens, it's even fairly useful with the Vermer 12mm fisheye with it's waterhouse stops as well.
