When my partner went to the US to work for a few months she obtained an official Customs declaration before leaving, which stated that she already owned her camera before departing.
If you could do that it may be slightly more convenient than carrying receipts around. As it's official Customs paperwork it'll definitely be less effort if you're questioned.
In retrospect I really should have done the same thing when I went to the UK a few years ago.
