Hmmm. This is relevant to Australia (Studdsy and I discussed this) and
may be relevant to the USA, but here in the UK, obtaining an official
carnet is costly and time consuming. 18 months ago I wrote to HM Customs
and Excise asking for clarification wrt taking lots od personal camera
kit abroad and then bringing it all back. The official line was 'there is
no duty on re-importing personal items of photographic gear back into the
UK'. The chap pointed out that if I wanted to I could carry receipts for
those items that I did have receipts for. I specifically pointed out that
I do not have receipts for all my stuff as some of it was purchased used
(eBay etc). This did not appear to be a problem.

In fact I printed off the letter and took it to Grandfather Mountain with
me last year and had it ready on my return to show my awareness of the
situation. In the event I walked through the green lane and straight out
the door!
