A couple of weeks ago I found myself heading to Dallas at 7am and 34,000 feet. This ridge of the Appalachian Mountains appealed to me, so I dug out the Optio 33L and took several shots.

After lots of work to restore something like the
original contrast and color in PSE2, here is what I
have:

Somehow, it lacks something. Any suggestions? Should
one just forget about photos from airplane windows?

One other idea... from the angle seen in the picture, it appears you were shooting more 'down' than straight out the window? I always find the distortion is less severe when shooting straight out. Somehow the curvature of the window reduces contrast visibly when shooting at more of an angle, even to the naked eye. Looking through more low-quality transparent material, I suppose.

I never sit close to the engine exhaust as that visibly disturbs the air I would need to shoot through. I've also recently noticed that sitting almost all the way to the back of the plane tends to yield cleaner, less damaged windows. I suspect because everyone ones the front seats and the ones to the rear are unnoccupied more often.

Another pseudo-scientific analysis brought to you by,
