I've been struggling with pretty much the same decision (a one-lens walking-around option when I don't want to carry all the primes). Since I don't currently have anything wider than the 35mm f2.0, the extra bit at the wide end of the 24-90 would actually expand my range in a meaningful way while still covering the portrait range. Last night I kind of threw it up to fate and bid on an auction for one that ended in the middle of the night and woke up this morning to find I'd won. So in a few weeks I guess I'll be able to begin discovering if I made the right decision.
