Pentax' D RAW files are somewhat like that, I suspect. Metadata and the sensor 
data, encapsulated into a minimal TIFF file structure. 

Non-destructive, lossless compression is often done on RAW files to reduce 
size. John Francis pointed out that Pentax has now implemented a bit-packing 
compression in the DS, why they're smaller than D RAW files. Canon definitely 
uses a more serious compression scheme for similar aims. 

Lossless compression is a good thing, allows you to fit more exposures in less 
storage.
