The problem isn't related to USB transfer (however a corrupt file could be a problem if the camera isn't smart enough to verify the file before updating its ROM). The problem stems from the fact that if during the update process (which isn't via USB it's in camera) the batteries fail then the camera could be rendered useless. The advice to use a power adaptor is fine but a good set of re-charged AA cells will work perfectly well. I hope no-one actually goes out to buy an adaptor purely to facilitate the firmware upgrades, it would be a waste of time and money.
