Actually I should add something to that to give credit where credit's due. Graywolf said in a post a while back something like:
Focus till it's sharp and then don't fiddle with it or your eyes will start playing tricks on you. I've found that to be true, if I find myself 'fiddling' with focus I crank the lens all the way out and then 'snap' focus back in. I've found that training myself this way has helped a lot. It's another reason the focus aids have become relatively useless. It's also taught me that if there is no 'snap' to the focus either my lens or viewfinder suck. (Techie Term) The ist-D with a good lens has a very nice snap, I just had to learn to trust it.
