Well, it's really more of a hypothesized predictor. As one, it's no worse than the "which conference won the Super Bowl" predictor, which IIRC was remarkably accurate for about 30 years, and may still be, for all I know. Or maybe the Super Bowl one was for US Presidential elections rather than the economy.
