I rarely use flash, and haven't been happy with the results of the built-in 
one on the *istD, but after some initial loose-contact glitches I have had 
excellent results using the AF500FTZ plus the built-in flash in contrast-
control mode on the *istD.
That was a convoluted sentence, so the summary: 
My *istD seems to work fine with the AF500FTZ.
