I don't use flash very often, but occasionally it's essential. I use a non-dedicated Sunpak 383 and Lumiquest Mini Soft Box or Ultra Soft II bounce diffuser. Exposures are close to perfect using the flash' on-board auto metering. I have been thinking of a Pentax AF360 or Sigma 500DG Super flash to have access to the second curtain sync...
